As the newborn Christ Child lay in His manger, shepherds, wise men and even birds and beasts came to offer gifts. Back in the corner of the stable stood a little fir tree. The tree was very sad because he saw the many splendid gifts the Child received and thought he had nothing to give that the baby Jesus would want. "All I have to offer are my needles, and they will only prick Him," he thought as he bowed his head in shame.

Looking down from Heaven, God saw how disappointed the tree was. Quietly, God called out to the stars and said, "Please go down and rest on the branches of the little fir tree who so dearly wishes to please Baby Jesus." The stars gladly obeyed. They fell from the night sky like little drops of silver and came to rest on the tree's branches. Soon the little fir was covered with a brilliant glow!

The Christ Child looked up at the tree and smiled. He stretched out His hand to touch the beautiful branches. The little fir tree glowed even brighter when he saw how pleased the infant Jesus was.

Each year after that, people put candles or lights on "Christmas trees" to remind everyone how the little tree's starlights delighted the baby Jesus!
