The Legend of the Silver Pinecone

Years ago there lived a very poor family. They had barely enough food to eat and little wood for a fire to keep warm. In desperation, the mother went to the woods to gather pinecones; some to burn in the fireplace and some to sell to buy food.

As she was gathering the pinecones, she suddenly heard a voice cry out "Why are you stealing my pinecones?" A tiny elf appeared, to whom she told her sad story. With a smile he said "Go deeper into the forest. The pinecones there will serve you much better."

As she walked farther into the forest she got very tired, so she set her basket down to rest . . . and down fell dozens of pinecones! She quickly gathered them and happily headed home. When she arrived at her doorstep she discovered that every pinecone had turned to solid silver! Now the family would never be poor again!

To this day, people hang a silver pinecone on the Christmas Tree, for as legend has it . . .
A silver pinecone will bring good fortune your way!

I've seen a few versions of this story... I've changed some things to make it mine.
